Can a trainer really check your form over video?

A trainer on a screen can't put a hand on your lower back. They can't feel how your shoulder moves, and they can't catch a bench press that's about to pin you. The skeptics are right about all of that.

What the skeptics usually get wrong is how much of coaching ever depended on touch. Watch a good in-person trainer and count how often they physically adjust a client versus how often they stand back and say something. Coaching is mostly watching. The real question is whether a camera lets a coach watch well enough, and physical therapists were forced to answer exactly that when their field moved to telehealth.

What is a coach actually looking at when they watch you lift?

"Checking your form" sounds vague until you break it into what a coach's eyes are actually doing.

Joint angles. At the bottom of a squat: where's your hip crease relative to your knee, how far forward has your shin traveled, has your pelvis tucked under. These are positions in space, and capturing positions in space is a camera's whole job.

Bar path. A good squat or deadlift keeps the load over the middle of your foot. If the bar drifts forward, your low back picks up the slack. From the side, bar path is one of the easiest things to see on video, because the coach sees your whole silhouette at once.

Tempo. How fast the weight moves, where it slows, whether rep six is grinding while rep one was crisp. Bar speed is a coach's best live readout of how close you are to failure, and it reads perfectly on video.

Symmetry and compensation. A hip shifting sideways out of the bottom. One arm locking out late. Heels peeling up, knees caving, a lower back that rounds when your hamstrings run out of range. These patterns predict where trouble comes from, and they're all visible.

None of that requires touching you. It requires seeing you clearly, which is a solvable problem.

Does the research say video assessment actually works?

Physiotherapy has spent 15 years testing whether remote assessment matches in-person, and the honest summary is: mostly yes for movement, with real exceptions.

A 2017 systematic review in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare found it feasible to assess range of motion, muscle strength, balance, and gait remotely in adults referred to physiotherapy, though validity and reliability varied a lot between studies. A 2021 review of 39 studies in the Journal of Global Health came to a similar place: synchronous video assessment looked valid and reliable for range of motion, strength testing, and pain in the populations studied, but weak for things like lumbar posture and special orthopedic shoulder tests.

The pattern repeats head to head. A 2023 systematic review in PLOS One, covering 10 studies that directly compared digital and face-to-face physiotherapy assessment, found near-perfect agreement for joint range of motion and for what the clinician decided to do next, but poor agreement on spinal posture, worst of all for lumbar lordosis. And a 2014 study in Telemedicine and e-Health had physical therapists assess the same low back pain patients in person and over video: agreement was high for detecting pain with specific movements and moderate for range of motion.

Put simply: when the question is "how is this body moving," video agrees with in-person assessment most of the time. When the question is "what is this spine doing, precisely," video gets noticeably worse. Both halves matter for lifting, and a coach who's honest about the second half is more believable on the first.

Which lifts read well on camera, and which don't?

The best-case lifts are squats and hinges filmed from the side. Nearly everything that matters in them happens in the sagittal plane, the one you'd see in a profile photo: hip and knee angles, shin travel, bar path, the shape of your back. A 2024 study in JOSPT Open found high agreement between plain 2D video and laboratory 3D motion capture for knee flexion range during a single-leg landing task. For frontal-plane stuff like knees caving inward, a 2012 study in the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation showed that measuring knee valgus from ordinary 2D video is reliable, which is why physios use that method in injury screening.

Presses, rows, lunges, and carries read well too, given a decent angle.

The worst case is subtle spinal positioning under near-maximal loads. The difference between a braced neutral back and a couple of degrees of lumbar flexion on a heavy deadlift is genuinely hard to see on video. It's hard in person too, which is why coaches in the flesh put a hand on your back, and it's exactly where the telehealth research shows the weakest agreement. A good side angle and snug clothing narrow that gap; they don't close it.

Why is camera placement the difference-maker?

The mechanism here explains almost every bad remote form check you've seen.

A camera flattens three dimensions into two. A joint angle only projects truthfully onto that flat image when the movement happens in a plane facing the lens straight on. Tilt the camera 30 degrees off axis and the same squat depth measures differently, a problem the motion-analysis literature calls perspective error. Height and distance matter too: a phone propped on the floor a meter away exaggerates whatever's closest to the lens, which is why floor-angle squat clips make everyone's knees look like a problem.

Put simply: the camera turns you into a drawing, and the drawing is only accurate when you stand square-on to the page.

The fixes are boring and they work. Side-on at hip height for squats, deadlifts, and hinges, far enough back that your whole body stays in frame. Front or 45 degrees when knees or elbows are the question. Behind for rows. The angle changes per exercise, which is why a fixed camera would be useless and a repositionable phone is not. What can a trainer honestly not do over video?

Three things, and any remote coach who won't say them plainly is selling you something.

No palpation. A coach can't feel muscle tone, find the tender spot, or tell whether a restriction comes from the joint or the tissue around it. If something hurts and the reason isn't obvious, video runs out of road, and the right move is an in-person clinician.

No true end-range feel. In person, a coach can passively move your shoulder or hip and feel where it stops and how. On video they can only watch you move yourself, which shows your usable range but not what's limiting it.

No physical spot. Nobody is grabbing the bar if a heavy bench goes wrong. A good remote coach programs around this instead of pretending it away: dumbbells or a rack with safeties for pressing near failure, a rep left in reserve on the big barbell lifts, and loads chosen from your bar speed rather than bravado.

Why does live video beat sending recorded clips?

Recorded form checks beat nothing, but they carry two built-in flaws that have nothing to do with camera quality.

The first is timing. Feedback changes the next rep most when it arrives seconds after the last one, while the feel of the mistake is still in your body. A note that arrives tomorrow fights every rep you did in the meantime. That gap is the whole subject of why a coach watches every rep.

The second is selection. When you film a clip to send your coach, you send the good set. Everyone does. It's an audition, not a sample, and your form actually breaks down on rep nine of set four, which is the rep worth watching. On a live call there's no editing. The coach sees the warm-ups, the grinders, and the moment your brace quits, and they can say "turn the phone a quarter turn" mid-session when the angle stops showing what they need. A recorded clip shot from the wrong angle is just wasted, and you find out a day later.

The honest caveats

The validity research above comes from physiotherapy and telehealth, mostly clinical populations with small samples, not from barbell coaching specifically, so treat it as strong circumstantial evidence rather than proof about your squat. Agreement varies by measure: movement holds up well, fine spinal detail doesn't, and no study I can find directly compares live-video strength coaching against in-person training on outcomes. And everything here assumes a stable camera and decent lighting. Video assessment done lazily, one fixed angle, half your body out of frame, deserves the skepticism.

What this means for you

  • Film squats and hinges side-on, camera at hip height, 3 or more meters back, whole body in frame for the whole set.
  • Add a head-on angle when the question is knees caving or an uneven lockout.
  • Film your last working set, not your first. The tired reps carry the information.
  • Check three things on your clips: bar over midfoot, depth consistent across reps, and rep speed on the final rep versus the first.
  • Wear something snug enough that your back and hips are visible. Baggy hoodies hide exactly the things worth seeing.
  • If a lift causes pain you can't explain, book an in-person assessment. That's where any camera, and any honest remote coach, hands you off.

Do I need special equipment for video form checks? A phone, something to prop it at the right height, and reasonable lighting. That's the whole kit.
