trainwell's refund policy: what 'cancel anytime' leaves out

trainwell's FAQ says you can cancel at any time, no questions and no hassle. Its terms say there are no refunds for the term you've already paid for. Both are true, because they describe different things. Which one applies to you depends on where you are in the billing cycle, and on the quarterly plan that cycle is three months.

I run Bespoke Fit, a competitor, so weigh that. This post isn't about which service is better. It's about the billing mechanics, which most people learn only after the charge lands. Everything here is quoted from trainwell's own pages as they read on September 3, 2026, with links.

The two sentences, side by side

The FAQ, under "Is there a contract?", says no: "you can cancel at any time inside the app. No questions and no hassle." The next sentence says subscriptions "automatically renew each billing cycle (monthly, quarterly, or annually depending on your plan choice)."¹

The terms, under the heading "No Refunds", say that cancelling a subscription stops only future charges, and that you won't receive a refund for the current subscription term you paid for. You keep full access until that term ends. trainwell may offer refunds, discounts or credits at its sole discretion, and doing so once doesn't oblige it to do so again.²

So "cancel anytime" means you can stop the next charge at any time. It doesn't mean you can stop paying. On a monthly plan that gap is a few weeks; on the quarterly plan trainwell advertises, it's three months.

What the quarterly plan charges

The price on trainwell's site is "$149 USD/month (billed in 3-month increments)".¹ That's a $447 charge every three months, and about $1,788 a year, charged four times. trainwell doesn't print the quarterly figure anywhere I could find, only the monthly rate with the billing interval in brackets.

The FAQ mentions monthly and annual plans, but the site only shows the quarterly price, so if you want to pay month to month, ask before you sign up and get the price in writing. The trial is 14 days, free, and includes the onboarding call.¹ Cancel inside those 14 days and you pay nothing. The charge that surprises people is the renewal after it.

Why this is the complaint people keep making

trainwell's Trustpilot profile holds 49 reviews at 4.7 stars, and the praise is consistent, mostly about trainers and accountability. The one recurring complaint, in the handful of low ratings, is cancellation and being charged after cancelling.³ The same story appears in App Store reviews, including a one-star review from February 2025 about a quarterly renewal landing after the reviewer thought they'd cancelled.⁴

The pattern is usually the same. Someone signed up on a quarterly plan, drifted away from the app, and got a $447 charge on the renewal date. They cancelled, expected the charge to be reversed, and learned that cancelling stops the next charge and leaves the current one in place. That's what the terms say will happen.

How to avoid that charge

Four things, in order of how much they save you.

Write down your renewal date on day one. It's the date of your first charge plus three months, and again every three months. The billing portal in the app shows it. Set a reminder a week before.

Cancel a few days before renewal, not after. Cancelling stops future charges, and you keep access to the end of the paid term, so there's no reason to wait. The steps are in how to cancel trainwell. Closing your account is a separate action from cancelling billing.

If you were charged and you're inside a few days, ask. The terms allow discretionary refunds, so send support a short, polite email with your renewal date and the date you cancelled. Don't count on it working.

If you came in through Peloton, the rules are different. The Peloton Personal Trainer add-on is billed by trainwell at $99.99 a month, and you cancel by emailing support@trainwell.net rather than in the app.⁵ Monthly billing means the most you can lose to timing is a month.

How other services handle the same moment

This is where I think trainwell is out of step with the rest of the market. Future charges $199 a month and lets you cancel within 30 days for a full refund.⁶ Caliber, another async coach service, publishes a 30-day money-back guarantee.⁷ Echelon Coach sells live sessions in bundles with a satisfaction guarantee on its plans page. None of them ask for three months up front with no way back.

Common questions

The subscription renews automatically each billing cycle, monthly, quarterly or annually depending on the plan you chose, and the new term is charged in full. Under the no-refund clause that charge stands. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you sign up, and cancel a few days early if you're not staying.
